My Beastie Book of ABC: Rhymes and Woodcuts by David Frampton (Illustrator)
Reading level: Ages 4-8

Although it starts with alligator and ends with zebra, this is not like any alphabet book we've ever seen. For one thing, David Frampton's beastie woodcuts are truly fantastic: a blasé-eyed warthog gazes out at the reader; a kangaroo bounces gleefully, pink birthday cake tucked in her pouch; and a speckled and freckled grasshopper leans into someone's drink cup for a little sip.

Accompanying these marvelous earth-toned illustrations are some of the best alphabet rhymes around: "N is for newt. / I'm sure that you knew. / You may name new newts / Newton. It's the right thing to do." And "Q is for quail, / found in the woods dark and tall. / But not for too long, / they're building a mall." And "M is for moose out in the barn. / No wait, that's a cow... darn!" David Frampton has illustrated many children's stories, including Eve Bunting's Riding the Tiger. A wonderfully original addition to any preschooler's bookshelf.
