Little Men" is the delightful story of an experimental boarding school run by Jo and her husband, Fritz. The Bhaers aspire to have a school where boys can learn more than just what is in books, though that is one important aspect of their education. They teach them honesty, integrity, faith, and a work ethic. They teach them to be kind, to care for all of God's creatures, to respect authority and to love one another.

This book is the story of Polly Milton, a country girl, who comes to stay with her friend Fanny Shaw in the city. Like the country mouse in the folktale of the country mouse and the city mouse, she is much impressed by the grandeur about her. Fanny always wears the latest fashions (she entices Polly into buying a pair of elegant bronze boots for nine dollars, an outrageous sum) and is fond of flirting with young men.

Little Women is the story of The Marches, a family used to hard toil and suffering. Although Father March is away with the Union armies, the sisters Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth keep in high spirits with their mother, affectionately named Marmee. Their friendly gift of a Christmas holiday breakfast to a neighbouring family is an act of generosity rewarded with wealthy Mr. Laurence's gift of a surprise Christmas feast.
