1913 was a very busy year for Beatrix. Preparations for her marriage to William Heelis, and moving into her new home, meant that she only just managed to finish this book. Most of the drawings are pen and ink, with just a few in the watercolours that have become synonymous with her work.

Poor Mrs. Tittlemouse had all sorts of insect intruders in her home. A "most terribly tidy particular little mouse", she chased away a beetle, a ladybird, a spider and a butterfly, as well as persuading Mr. Jackson to remove a whole nest of bees.

Beatrix Potter's interest in insects began when she was very young. One of her earliest sketchbooks contains drawings of caterpillars. Later, in the 1890s, she visited the Natural History Museum in South Kensington and studied the displays of insects there.

In 1901, while holidaying in the Lake District, Beatrix wrote a letter to Norah Moore, sister of Noel, describing the Squirrels she saw daily. This letter eventually developed into the story of the cheeky squirrel, who dared to tease 'Old Brown' the owl, living on an island in the lake.

This is the introduction to one of the best-loved children's stories of all time - The Tale of Peter Rabbit. However, the story of how Beatrix Potter's most famous character came to have a book published about him is another tale entirely.

Eight Cousins is in fact a treatise on the raising of young girls, written at a time when health was not widely considered a high priority. Milk and oatmeal and bread and exercise, an education in which information is discussed rather than merely memorized, practical skills and comfortable warm clothing and affection are what Rose needs, and she receives all of them plus many adventures shared with her cousins and the housemaid, Phebe.
