Eight Cousins is in fact a treatise on the raising of young girls, written at a time when health was not widely considered a high priority. Milk and oatmeal and bread and exercise, an education in which information is discussed rather than merely memorized, practical skills and comfortable warm clothing and affection are what Rose needs, and she receives all of them plus many adventures shared with her cousins and the housemaid, Phebe.

Little Men" is the delightful story of an experimental boarding school run by Jo and her husband, Fritz. The Bhaers aspire to have a school where boys can learn more than just what is in books, though that is one important aspect of their education. They teach them honesty, integrity, faith, and a work ethic. They teach them to be kind, to care for all of God's creatures, to respect authority and to love one another.

This book is the story of Polly Milton, a country girl, who comes to stay with her friend Fanny Shaw in the city. Like the country mouse in the folktale of the country mouse and the city mouse, she is much impressed by the grandeur about her. Fanny always wears the latest fashions (she entices Polly into buying a pair of elegant bronze boots for nine dollars, an outrageous sum) and is fond of flirting with young men.
