A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
    Reading level: Ages 9-12

Everyone in town thinks Meg Murry is volatile and dull-witted, and that her younger brother, Charles Wallace, is dumb. People are also saying that their physicist father has run off and left their brilliant scientist mother. Spurred on by these rumors and an unearthly stranger, the tesseract-touting Mrs Whatsit, Meg and Charles Wallace and their new friend Calvin O'Keefe embark on a perilous quest through space to find their father. In doing so, they must travel behind the shadow of an evil power that is darkening the cosmos, one planet at a time.

This is no superhero tale, nor is it science fiction, although it shares elements of both. The travelers must rely on their individual and collective strengths, delving deep within themselves to find answers.

A well-loved classic and 1963 Newbery Medal winner, Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time is sophisticated in concept yet warm in tone, with mystery and love coursing through its pages. Meg's shattering, yet ultimately freeing, discovery that her father is not omnipotent provides a satisfying coming-of-age element. Readers will feel a sense of power as they travel with these three children, challenging concepts of time, space, and the triumph of good over evil. The companion books in the Time quartet, continuing the adventures of the Murry family, are A Wind in the Door; A Swiftly Tilting Planet, which won the American Book Award; and Many Waters. Every young reader should experience L'Engle's captivating, occasionally life-changing contributions to children's literature. (Ages 9 and older)

Do Not Read Or Waste A Cent On This Book. Don't Even Get It For Free.

A Wrinkle in Time is an extremely terrible book. Its attempt at science fiction is out of place and corny to the extreme. I read this book expecting it to be a decent novel, but instead I encountered garbage. Oh, and don't pay attention to the Newbery Medal Award that they awarded. They probably awarded it to A Wrinkle in Time because there were no other books published that year, so it won by default. This book would be more entertaining...if it were burnt.

I respectfully disagree. I did not find this book or any others in the series to be a waste of time at all. It is set in a period of our nation's history when things were simpler and family life was more important. This may cause cynical folks to deem it corny and trite, but when taken in the context of the era, it is most decidedly not. Although the author makes no mention of a specific year, and indeed probably avoided it on purpose, there are a few descriptions in the story that place it in the 50's or 60's. Yet the issues that face the main characters are timeless. Meg & Charles Wallace face bullying issues at school, lack of acceptance from peers, an absent father, defending siblings and mother from rumors, etc. Any of these issues could just as easily have been ripped from today's headlines.

In addition, after reading some of the author's non-fiction work on being a writer, I don't think she was aiming to write a science fiction novel when she started "Wrinkle." I think she just sat down and wrote what came to her and in serving the work she ended up with a piece that had elements of science fiction in it. Not only that, but it has been well documented that the science parts of the novel were well researched.

In closing, I found this book to be an absolutely delightful read. The characters were well developed and realistic, the story line was full of imagination and unexpected twists, and the happy ending was an emotional one. Run, do not walk to your local bookstore, and pick up this well-deserved Newbury Award Medal winner.
