Meltdown: A Race Against Nuclear Disaster at Three Mile Island by Wilborn Hampton

This book is a compelling account of the nuclear meltdown on March 28, 1979, at Three Mile Island. Journalist Wilborn Hampton was ordered to Pennsylvania to cover the unfolding real-life disaster.

His reconstruction of that week shows the fear and uncertainty that spread through the plant and surrounding towns. It tells of wranglings between politicians and scientists and of midnight press conferences that make the readers feel that they are investigating the story with him. It's an exciting account that tells as much about a journalist's job as it does about the history.
