A Step From Heaven by An Na
Young Ju was moved from Han Gook (Korea) to Mi Gook when she was only four and was told by her uncle that she was only 'A Step from Heaven.' Young Ju had to grow up fast, she didn't know any English then there was the arrival of her little brother. This book shows some of the Korean tradition and slowly adds American culture.

The characters all have very defined personalities. From the abusive father, to the worried mother, to the almost carefree brother. In the end you want all of them to end up safe (well, maybe the father.)
Speech marks are only used when English is spoken. But the Korean language in this book makes the book more enticing. On occasion the atmosphere is scary while the story builds to the climax. This is a realistic, interesting and unusual book.
